How to Play Football Wordle

Football Wordle is a free word-guessing game for football fans. You have six tries to guess the name of a football player or club, using color-coded letter hints to narrow down each guess. This page walks you through every rule, explains what each color means, shares practical tips, and answers the most common questions players have.

The basics

At the start of each round the game selects a hidden word — either a football player's last name or a football club's name depending on the mode you chose. Your job is to figure out that word in six guesses or fewer.

Each guess must be typed using the on-screen keyboard (on mobile) or your physical keyboard (on desktop) and submitted by pressing Enter. After you submit, every letter in your guess lights up with a color that tells you how close you are to the correct answer.

There is no daily limit — you can play as many rounds as you like back to back. Each round picks a fresh word from the full list.

What the colors mean

Understanding the color hints is the key skill in Football Wordle. There are three possible colors:

R
O
N
A
G Green — the letter is in the answer AND in the exact right position.
Y Yellow — the letter exists in the answer but is in the wrong position. Move it somewhere else on your next guess.
R Red — the letter does not appear anywhere in the answer. Remove it from all future guesses.

The on-screen keyboard also updates its key colors after each guess so you can see at a glance which letters are confirmed, misplaced, or eliminated — without having to scroll back through your previous rows.

Worked example

Suppose the hidden word is SILVA and you guess SALAS:

S
A
L
A
S

S in position 1 is green — it's correct there. A in position 2 is yellow — it's in the answer but not in that spot. L, A, and S in positions 3, 4, 5 are red — these letters don't appear in the remaining positions (note: S is already used in position 1).

From this you know: the answer starts with S, contains an A that isn't in position 2, and doesn't have an extra L or S elsewhere. That's enough to dramatically narrow your next guess.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. Pick a mode. From the home page tap Guess players to guess a footballer's name, or Guess clubs to guess a club name. Both modes play identically — only the word list changes.
  2. Read the board length. Before typing, count how many letter tiles appear on the board. That's exactly how many letters are in the hidden word. Use that length to filter possible names immediately.
  3. Type your first guess. On desktop, use your keyboard directly. On mobile, tap the on-screen keys. Words are case-insensitive and accents are handled automatically, so you never need to type accented characters.
  4. Press Enter to submit. On mobile there is a dedicated send button. On desktop press the Enter key. The tiles will flip to reveal colors.
  5. Read the color hints on each tile and on the keyboard, then use them to form a better second guess. Keep green letters in place, reuse yellow letters in a different position, and exclude all red letters from future guesses.
  6. Repeat for up to six guesses. If you guess the word before running out you win; otherwise the answer is revealed.
  7. Check your stats. After each round a stats summary shows your current streak, win percentage, and guess distribution. Tap Play again to start a new round immediately.

Game modes explained

Guess players

The hidden word is the last name of a well-known professional footballer. The player pool covers men's and women's top-flight leagues including the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1, MLS, and major international competitions. Lists are reviewed weekly and updated after each major transfer window so the names stay current and relevant.

For Brazilian and some other South American players who are universally known by a single name or first name (Neymar, Vinicius, Rodrygo), the game uses that single name rather than the surname.

Guess clubs

The hidden word is the name — or the most distinctive keyword — of a professional football club. Clubs are drawn from the same top-flight leagues. Names are kept to what fits the board: longer club names may be shortened to the most distinctive word (for example, "Forest" for Nottingham Forest) so the puzzle remains fair and recognisable.

Keyboard and input

Desktop keyboard

Type normally using your physical keyboard. Only letters A–Z are accepted; numbers and symbols are ignored. Press Enter to submit your guess and Backspace to delete the last letter typed.

Mobile on-screen keyboard

The on-screen keyboard is designed for touchscreens and shows all available letters. Tap letters to build your guess. Use the backspace key (←) to delete and the send key to submit. The keyboard updates its colors after each guess, just like the board tiles.

Accents and special characters

Many football names include accented letters (ñ, ü, é, ç, ø) or other special characters. Football Wordle normalises all names to basic Latin letters automatically — you never need to type an accent. Just type the plain letter equivalent and the game handles the rest.

Streaks and statistics

Football Wordle tracks four stats automatically for each game mode:

Stats are tracked separately for players mode and clubs mode. A win in one mode does not affect the streak in the other.

All stats are stored in your browser's local storage. They reset if you clear your browser data, and they do not sync across devices or require any account.

Tips to improve your guesses

Start with common letters. In football names the letters A, E, R, S, and N appear very frequently. Opening with a name that contains several of these gives you a strong first hint regardless of the answer.
Pay attention to word length. The board shows how many tiles the answer has before you type anything. A five-letter board means you're looking for a five-letter name — use that to filter out players with longer or shorter names immediately.
Use yellow hints carefully. A yellow letter must appear somewhere in the answer, just not where you placed it. On your next guess, move that letter to a different position rather than dropping it altogether. Never ignore a yellow — it's a confirmed letter.
Never reuse red letters. Once a tile goes red, that letter is not in the answer anywhere. Before submitting each guess, quickly scan your previous red tiles to make sure none of those letters snuck into your new guess. This is the most common mistake players make.
Think by league. Once you have two or three confirmed letters, narrow candidates by mentally filtering through the leagues you know. La Liga names often end in -EZ or -O. Premier League squads include many short English names and longer West African names. Bundesliga names often include consonant clusters. Use that knowledge to generate better guesses.
Use an information guess on guess 4 or 5. If you're down to two possible answers with one guess remaining, it's often worth spending guess 4 or 5 on a word that tests the letters distinguishing the two candidates — even if that guess itself isn't a valid answer. This is better than a coin flip.
Accents are normalised. Football has many names with accented letters (ñ, ü, é, ø, etc.). Football Wordle normalises all names to basic Latin letters so you never need to type accents — just type the plain letter equivalent.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play more than once per day?
Yes. Unlike the original Wordle which has one puzzle per day, Football Wordle lets you start a new round immediately after each game. Each round picks a new word from the full list at random.
Are answers repeated?
Words can repeat across different sessions. The list is large enough that repetitions are uncommon in short sessions, but because the game picks words at random you may occasionally see the same answer twice.
What if I think the word list is outdated?
Lists are updated weekly during the football season and after major transfer windows. If you think a name is missing or outdated, contact us at webgames594@gmail.com.
Does it work offline?
The game loads its word list when the page is first opened. Once loaded, it works without an internet connection until you refresh the page.
Why did my stats reset?
Stats are stored in your browser's local storage. Clearing your browser's cache or data, or using a private/incognito window, will reset them. Stats do not sync across devices.
Can I switch between players mode and clubs mode?
Yes. Use the back button at the top of the game screen to return to the mode selector at any time. Your current round will be abandoned but your stats are preserved.
Why is my guess not accepted?
Football Wordle currently accepts any sequence of letters up to the word length — the game does not validate against a fixed dictionary. Make sure you are typing only letters (no spaces or special characters) and that your guess matches the length shown on the board.
Does Football Wordle store my personal data?
No. We store only your game stats in your browser's local storage. No name, email, IP, or device identifier is collected. See the full privacy policy.
Is Football Wordle affiliated with the original Wordle?
No. Football Wordle is an independent fan project. It is not affiliated with the New York Times, the original Wordle game, any professional football league, or any official club or governing body.
How is Football Wordle funded?
The game is free to play and supported by display advertising through Google AdSense. Ad placements are positioned away from the game board and keyboard to avoid accidental taps. See our privacy policy for details on how ads work.
What browsers does Football Wordle support?
Football Wordle works on any modern browser — Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge — on both desktop and mobile. Internet Explorer is not supported.
Can I share my result with friends?
At the end of each round the stats screen shows your result. You can take a screenshot to share on social media. A native share feature is on our roadmap.
